A psychiatrist is a medical doctor that can provide therapy but can also prescribe medication to patients suffering from mental disorders and focuses on managing medication with the individual for the best treatment.

An advanced practitioning registered nurse has a master’s degree that includes academic and clinical training in a particular area of medicine. Psychiatric nurse practitioners are eligible to prescribe medication and provide psychotherapy.
